Some Social News: Is the Peak of TikTok Finally Passed?

It looks like its once-soaring popularity in the U.S. might be hitting a plateau. A bunch of research reports are pointing in that direction.

According to Apptopia, TikTok downloads have dropped 20% this year compared to 2022, and in July, they hit a multi-year low with a 32% drop from the previous July. That's a pretty sharp decline.

Data.ai (formerly App Annie) also pitched in, reporting an 18% drop in U.S. downloads this year. Both Apptopia and Data.ai show TikTok still growing worldwide, but it seems the U.S. is in a bit of a slump.

Even Apple's annual report on the most popular free iPhone apps has TikTok slipping from No. 1 in 2022 to No. 5 this year. Ouch.

Cloudflare's annual ranking of internet services also has TikTok losing a bit of ground, dropping from No. 3 to No. 4.

And to add to the mix, Pew Research Center's recent survey suggests that the share of American teens using TikTok hasn't changed much in the past 18 months, holding steady at 63%.

What's going on? Some folks are thinking TikTok might be hitting a saturation point. You know, that moment when everyone who's going to use it is already on board, and growth starts slowing down. It's a common thing in the social media world. Remember when Facebook reported a decline in users for the first time in 17 years? Yeah, it's a bit like that.

But hey, TikTok does have some competition these days. Instagram and YouTube are stepping up their game with features similar to TikTok's, and there's a new player in the iPhone app ranking – a shopping app called Temu.

On the political side, TikTok is still in the hot seat. There's talk of banning it due to concerns about foreign propaganda and data security. The debate is ongoing, with lobbyists duking it out in Washington.

Even with all this, TikTok did get a small win in Pew's survey – support for a ban among adults dropped a bit. Teens, on the other hand, mostly oppose a ban.

One of the many reasons why we're developing Socialode is to avoid the social media market, like this. Overall, we can't wait to show you what we have in store in 2024.
